Marionette lines run downwards from the corners of the mouth towards the chin and jawline and become more visible with age. Early on, they can appear as a small downturn at the mouth corner. Later on in life, they can develop into deeper, more pronounced folds. People often feel marionette lines create the appearance of a ‘sad mouth’ and a grumpy resting facial expression, even when they feel the exact opposite.
That’s why marionette line dermal filler is one of our favourite treatments – it can quite literally turn a frown upside down!
What causes marionette lines?
Marionette lines appear when the face sags due to the fat depletion and bone structure changes that are part of the natural ageing process. They tend to deepen and appear more pronounced as you age due to increasing volume loss in the face over time. Their timing and severity also depends on genetic predisposition, so some people will naturally have more pronounced marionette lines as they get older.
How do we treat them?
Dermal filler treatment is an effective way to reduce marionette lines. This treatment can be approached in several ways.
- Smooth marionette lines out directly with a small amount of dermal filler placed underneath each fold itself.
- If the line is deep, using a larger amount of dermal filler can indirectly pull and support the face back to its youthful positioning. This may involve treating surrounding areas of the face, such as the cheeks or jawline. By taking this holistic approach your practitioner will be able to recreate a facial structure closer to the one you had when you were younger.
- Skinboosters – if reduced superficial skin quality is contributing to their appearance.
The treatment approach best-suited to you and your treatment goals will be discussed during your consultation with a medical professional.
How long does this dermal filler last?
The length of time your marionette line filler results last will vary depending on various factors. These include the amount of product used, treatment approach and individual physiology, as well as your lifestyle. Filler in this area typically lasts between 6 and 12 months.
