SPF Mistakes You’re Probably Making

TAC Blog SPF Mistakes

SPF mistakes are more common than you’d think. Did you know these could be impacting your aesthetic results?

SPF is one of the most important steps in any skincare routine, yet it remains one of the most commonly misunderstood. When used correctly, daily sun protection helps reduce the risk of pigmentation, fine lines, uneven skin tone, collagen breakdown, and premature ageing.

At The Academy Clinic, we see first-hand how small SPF adjustments can improve long-term skin health.

In support of Skin Cancer Awareness Month, this guide breaks down the most common SPF mistakes and how to correct them in a simple, realistic way, without overcomplicating your routine. Your exclusive SPF offer can be found at the end of this guide, to kickstart your routine.

Why SPF Matters Every Day

The goal of sunscreen is to protect the skin from two types of ultraviolet radiation:

  • UVA rays: responsible for premature ageing, pigmentation, and collagen breakdown
  • UVB rays: responsible for sunburn and immediate surface damage

Importantly, UVA rays are present year-round, even on cloudy days and indoors near windows. This is why SPF should be a daily non-negotiable, not just a summer essential.

1. You’re not using enough SPF

One of the most common SPF mistakes. SPF applied with good intentions, but with not enough product used.

If SPF isn’t applied in the correct amount, you won’t achieve the level of protection stated on the bottle. Most people use far too little without realising it.

For the face alone, a practical guide is the equivalent of two full finger lengths of product. Think of SPF like a shield!

Our skin practitioners at our Manchester and London clinics are your go-to source of knowledge for all skincare and skin-related queries, here to help you understand your skin and guide you through any concerns or issues you may have.

2. Inconsistent daily use

A common misconception is that SPF is only necessary during periods of strong sunlight or warm weather. The British weather does like unpredictability, but UVA rays are far less dramatic.

In reality, UVA radiation (which is primarily responsible for skin ageing and pigmentation) is present year-round, regardless of weather conditions. It passes through cloud cover and glass, meaning exposure occurs even indoors and during overcast days.

For optimal skin health, SPF should be treated as part of your morning skincare routine all year round, just like cleansing or moisturising. A consistent, well-structured skincare routine also provides the essential foundation to optimise results from in-clinic skin treatments and injectable treatments at The Academy Clinic.

3. Lack of SPF reapplication

SPF often gets a strong opening act in the morning and then disappears from the stage. Applying SPF once in the morning does not provide all-day protection.

Environmental exposure, natural oil production, perspiration, and contact with the skin all contribute to the breakdown of sunscreen effectiveness over time. As a result, protection diminishes throughout the day.

Reapplication every two to three hours is recommended when exposed to daylight. Where reapplication of traditional liquid sunscreen is impractical, SPF mists or powders can be used to maintain protection without disrupting makeup.

4. Neglecting commonly missed areas

SPF application is often concentrated on the face, with other areas unintentionally overlooked.

Frequently missed areas include:

  • Hairline and parting
  • Ears
  • Neck and sides of the neck
  • Décolletage
  • Hands
  • Upper eyelids

These areas are often among the first to show visible signs of sun damage, including pigmentation changes and ageing.

Comprehensive application is essential to ensure protection and prevent uneven skin ageing. Why not try the SVR Sun Secure SPF50+ – a velvety, invisible, non-greasy finish SPF formula which glides smoothly across the face and other areas of the body. This product can be purchased at our Manchester and London clinics.

5. Treating SPF as a standalone solution

Although SPF is essential, it should not be considered a complete protective strategy on its own.

Optimal skin health relies on a combination of approaches, including:

  • Antioxidant protection (such as vitamin C)
  • Barrier-supportive skincare
  • Physical protection such as hats and shade
  • Professional treatments that support skin repair and resilience

SPF is a foundational element, but not the entirety of skin protection. A well-rounded skincare plan, carefully devised by our skin practitioners, works cohesively alongside in-clinic skin treatments and aesthetic treatments such as skin boosters and dermal filler to support healthier, more resilient, and longer-lasting results.

Understanding Your Skin with a Skin Analysis

A professional skin analysis allows us to understand what your skin is truly doing beneath the surface, not just what is visible day to day.

At The Academy Clinic, this is combined with a thorough, holistic consultation, where we will discuss your medical history, skin concerns, and long-term skin goals. To enhance this, we use OBSERV skin analysis technology – an advanced, medical-grade system that supports highly personalised treatment planning. All skin consultations are carried out by a skin specialist.

This approach helps us accurately identify:

  • Pigmentation
  • Sun damage
  • Rosacea and inflammation
  • Hydration and oil balance
  • Overall skin health

Rather than overcomplicating your routine, a skin analysis provides clarity, to then guide your skincare and SPF choices to be more targeted, effective, and results-driven. These consultations are great insights that helps us optimise and refine your results further.

SPF doesn’t need to be strict, complicated, or perfect. In most cases, a few small, consistent adjustments can make a significant difference to your skin’s long-term health and appearance.

With Skin Cancer Awareness Month, it’s also an important time to highlight that SPF plays a key role in protecting your overall skin health.

Daily SPF helps to:

  • Reduce the risk of UV-induced skin damage
  • Protect against premature ageing and pigmentation
  • Support long-term skin health
  • Most importantly, help lower the risk of skin cancer caused by cumulative UV exposure

UV damage builds gradually over time, often without immediate visible signs. This is why consistent, daily protection is so important even in the UK climate.
