Skin Rejuvenation After Summer: Repairing Skin and Restoring Glow

Skin Rejuvenation After Summer Repairing Skin and Restoring Glow Blog

After weeks of sunshine, warmer temperatures, holidays and outdoor activities, your skin may not look or feel quite the same as it did at the beginning of summer.

Even with regular SPF application, prolonged exposure to UV rays, heat, sweat, air conditioning, travel and changes to your usual skincare routine can leave skin feeling dry, dehydrated, dull or uneven.

So, what can you do to help your skin recover after summer?

We asked Vrisha, Skin Practitioner at The Academy Clinic in London, how to identify the effects of summer on your skin, which skincare steps can support recovery and which professional skin treatments may help restore a healthier, more radiant complexion.

What happens to your skin after summer?

Summer can place additional stress on the skin.

UV exposure is one of the biggest factors to consider. Sun exposure can contribute to visible signs of skin ageing and pigmentation, while heat, sweating and dehydration can also affect how the skin looks and feels.

After a summer of exposure, you may notice:

  • Dull or lacklustre-looking skin
  • Dryness or dehydration
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Increased pigmentation or dark spots
  • Rougher skin texture
  • Fine lines appearing more noticeable
  • Congested or blemish-prone skin
  • Increased sensitivity
  • Loss of your usual healthy-looking glow

Vrisha, skin practitioner says:

“After summer, I often see patients whose skin feels dehydrated, looks dull or has developed more uneven pigmentation. The key is not to overwhelm the skin with too many products or treatments, but to assess what it actually needs and build a targeted recovery plan.”

How to identify sun damage on your skin after a holiday

Not all sun damage is immediately obvious.

Some changes can become more noticeable weeks or months after periods of increased UV exposure. Pigmentation, uneven tone and changes in skin texture can all be signs that your skin has experienced increased environmental stress.

Common visible signs can include:

Uneven pigmentation

Sun exposure can contribute to areas of increased pigmentation, including dark spots and uneven patches of colour.

Dull-looking skin

Skin can appear less radiant after periods of dehydration, heat and environmental exposure.

Changes in texture

You may notice that your skin feels rougher or less smooth than usual.

Fine lines appearing more visible

Dehydrated skin can make fine lines look more pronounced.

Increased sensitivity

If your skin barrier has become compromised, products that you previously tolerated may suddenly feel irritating. Some changes also occur beneath the surface of the skin and may not yet be visible to the naked eye.

During a GOLD Skin Analysis at The Academy Clinic in London and Manchester, our skin practitioners use OBSERV Skin Analysis technology to assess concerns. Including sun damage, pigmentation, hydration, pore size and redness. These insights help us understand your skin in detail and create a targeted, well-rounded treatment plan.

Plus, for a limited time from August, all London GOLD Skin Analysis appointments will also include the Cortex DermaLab alongside OBSERV technology in one appointment. Cortex DermaLab uses advanced imaging and clinical measurements to assess key skin health markers. Your collagen levels, dermal thickness, hydration, elasticity and skin barrier function are assessed.

Together, OBSERV and Cortex DermaLab provide a more comprehensive picture of your skin. Our skin practitioners can track changes over time and create an even more personalised skincare and treatment plan.

How to repair skin after summer

The first step in post-summer skin recovery is to focus on supporting the skin barrier, hydration and protection. Rather than immediately reaching for strong exfoliants or multiple active ingredients, consider simplifying your routine and allowing your skin to recover.

1. Prioritise hydration

Hydrated skin can look smoother, plumper and more radiant.

Look for skincare designed to support hydration and the skin barrier, and consider whether your current cleanser or active ingredients may be contributing to dryness. SVR B3 hydrating essence is a great option to target sensitive and dehydrated skin. Purchase at our London and Manchester clinics.

2. Continue using SPF every day

SPF shouldn’t stop when summer ends.

UV exposure occurs throughout the year, so daily broad-spectrum 50+ sunscreen (such as SVR Sun Secure SPF 50+) remains an important part of any skin recovery routine. This is particularly important if you’re trying to address pigmentation or other visible signs of sun exposure.

3. Don’t over-exfoliate

It can be tempting to exfoliate more frequently when your skin feels dull.

However, aggressive or excessive exfoliation can cause irritation and compromise the skin barrier. Post-summer skincare should focus on restoring balance rather than stripping the skin.

4. Reintroduce active ingredients carefully

Ingredients such as retinoids and exfoliating acids can have an important role in a skincare routine, but they aren’t necessarily appropriate for everyone or every skin concern. If your skin is feeling sensitive or dry after summer, speak to a skincare professional about how and when to introduce active ingredients.

5. Consider a professional skin assessment

One of the most useful things you can do after summer is have your skin properly assessed.

Rather than choosing a treatment based purely on what you see in the mirror, a skin practitioner can help identify your main concerns and recommend a personalised approach. Our Manchester and London skin practitioners are ready to target your skin concerns and revive your post-summer skin.

Best skincare routine for post-summer skin recovery

A simple post-summer skincare routine could focus on four key areas:

Morning skincare routine

  1. Gentle cleanse
  2. Hydrating or antioxidant serum, where appropriate
  3. Moisturiser
  4. Broad-spectrum SPF

Evening skincare routine

  1. Gentle cleanse
  2. Targeted serum or active ingredient, depending on your skin
  3. Moisturiser
  4. Additional barrier-supporting products if needed

The exact products and ingredients should depend on your skin type, concerns and existing routine.

What are the best skin treatments after summer?

There isn’t one universal “best” post-summer treatment.

The right treatment depends on what has changed in your skin and what you’re trying to achieve.

At The Academy Clinic, treatment options can include advanced skin treatments designed to target concerns such as dehydration, dullness, pigmentation, uneven texture and signs of skin ageing.

Hydrafacial for post-summer skin

A Hydrafacial is a great treatment option when the skin is looking dull, congested or dehydrated.

The treatment combines cleansing, exfoliation and hydration to help refresh the appearance of the skin. It can be a useful option for someone looking for a treatment that focuses on overall skin quality, fine lines and wrinkles, texture and glow. Downtime is minimal to none, making this a great lunchtime treatment.

Patients enjoy adding dermaplaning to this treatment, for extra smoothness and radiance. Dermaplaning treatment can also help skincare absorb even better. The perfect solution for post-summer skin.

Chemical peels for pigmentation and dull skin

Superficial chemical peels can be a great option for reviving skin after summer. Patients can then progress onto medium depth chemical peels. This treatment can help improve the appearance of dullness, uneven skin tone, pigmentation and texture.

The type and strength of peel will be chosen according to your skin and concerns. If your skin is particularly sensitive or recently sunburned, treatment may need to be delayed until the skin has recovered.

Microneedling for skin texture and rejuvenation

Microneedling uses controlled micro-injuries to stimulate the skin’s natural repair processes. It may be considered for concerns including uneven texture, fine lines, acne scarring and overall skin rejuvenation. When combined with exosomes, microneedling can further support the skin’s natural recovery and renewal processes. The Mesoestetic® regenerative cocktail, containing vegan exosomes, NAD and niacinamide, is applied to the skin through the micro-channels created by the microneedling device.

This powerful combination works alongside the skin’s natural collagen-induction process to support cellular repair, skin renewal and overall skin health.

However, skin that has recently experienced significant sun exposure may need time to settle before treatment. Hydrafacials and superficial chemical peels may be the right starting point. This is why a medical-led consultation and skin assessment are important before treatment.

Moving into the Autumn months, our newest skin treatment, combined microneedling and chemical peel is an exciting option. This advanced combination treatment brings together ultimate skin-renewing benefits. Patients can refine skin texture, brighten the complexion, improve pigmentation, and stimulate collagen and elastin.

LED light therapy for post-summer skin

LED Light Therapy can be incorporated into some skin treatment plans to support overall skin health. It is a gentle, non-invasive and relaxing treatment that can complement other treatments depending on individual skin concerns.

Different wavelengths of LED light work at different depths within the skin. Red and near-infrared light are commonly used to support cellular recovery and help soothe mild redness following environmental stress, including sun exposure. Blue light works closer to the skin’s surface and is often used for blemish-prone skin.

LED Light Therapy can help soothe mild skin redness and support cellular recovery after sun exposure, but it does not replace sunscreen or heal acute sunburn.

Skinboosters and injectable skin treatments

For patients concerned with dehydration, skin quality or signs of ageing, injectable skin treatments may form part of a wider skin rejuvenation plan. Skinboosters are injectable moisturisers which plump, diminish fine lines and hydrate deeper layers of the skin. Recovery can take up to 48 hours, to settle any signs of swelling and redness.

Collagen-stimulating injectable treatments such as Profhilo® and polynucleotides are also post-summer favourites. Expect skin hydration, tightening and rejuvenation. Similar to skinboosters, these patients may experience minimal to moderate downtime.

These treatments work differently from topical skincare and advanced skin treatments. They may be recommended following an individual assessment with our aesthetic practitioners.

How soon after a holiday should you have a skin treatment?

This depends on the treatment and the condition of your skin.

If you’ve recently been sunburned, peeling, unusually sensitive or experiencing significant irritation, professional treatments may need to be postponed.

Certain treatments, including chemical peels and microneedling, also require no sun exposure 4 weeks before and after treatment. This ensures your skin recovery is supported and reduces the risk of complications. Always let your practitioner know about recent sun exposure. If you are unsure, simply reach out to our team.

Your practitioner will assess your skin before recommending treatment and advise you on the appropriate timing. In many cases, the priority immediately after a holiday is simply to protect, hydrate and support the skin barrier before introducing more intensive treatments.

Vrisha, skin practitioner, says:

“After summer, it’s important to give your skin time to recover. Focus on hydration, barrier support and daily SPF to help restore and protect the skin.”

Should you have a skin consultation after summer?

If you’re unsure what your skin needs, a professional skin consultation is the best starting point. At The Academy Clinic, our practitioners can assess your skin concerns and help create a treatment and skincare plan based on your individual needs.

Rather than treating every post-summer concern in the same way, the aim is to understand why your skin has changed and which approach is most appropriate for you.

If your skin feels different after summer, you’re not alone. From dehydration and dullness to pigmentation and changes in texture; there are a number of ways to support your skin as it transitions into autumn.
