Profile Balancing: An Expert Guide with Dr Emily Mehta

Patient receiving treatment by two medical professionals

Profile balancing has become an increasingly requested aesthetic treatment outcome over the last few years, with more patients looking for subtle ways to enhance facial harmony without drastically changing their individual features.

Rather than focusing on one area of the face in isolation, profile balancing considers how features such as the nose, lips, chin and jawline relate to one another. Small, carefully considered adjustments can help create greater balance and proportion while maintaining a natural-looking result.

Known for her beautifully natural results and considered approach to aesthetic medicine, Dr Emily Mehta will be offering advanced filler Diamond appointments from October 2026. These appointments will focus on advanced dermal filler treatments, facial balancing and comprehensive treatment planning.

We sat down with Dr Emily to explore profile balancing, why it has become so popular and how aesthetic treatments can create subtle, considered improvements.

What is profile balancing?

Dr Emily explains: “Profile balancing is about looking at the face as a whole, rather than treating individual features in isolation.”

When assessing someone’s profile, we consider the relationship between different facial structures, including the nose, lips, chin and jawline. Sometimes, a very subtle change in one area can make a noticeable difference to the overall balance of the face.

Importantly, profile balancing isn’t about trying to make everyone look the same or to create a particular facial shape. The aim is to preserve the patient’s individual features while making small tweaks.

It’s about creating harmony and proportion, rather than adding volume for the sake of it.

Why is profile balancing so popular?

The growing interest in profile balancing reflects a wider shift towards more subtle and individualised approaches to aesthetic treatment.

“I think patients are increasingly interested in treatments that enhance rather than transform their appearance.”

We’re also seeing more people looking at their face from different angles and becoming interested in how their features relate to one another, rather than focusing on a single feature.

Profile balancing can be particularly appealing because the changes can be very subtle. For some patients, improving the projection or proportion of one area can alter how another feature appears, without actually treating that feature directly.

It’s about understanding the structure of the face and making small changes that work together.

What treatments can help balance your profile?

There isn’t one treatment that is suitable for everyone. The right approach depends entirely on the individual’s anatomy, concerns and desired outcome.

For some patients, dermal filler may be appropriate to enhance areas such as the chin or jawline, or to provide subtle support and definition around the lips.

Other patients may benefit from skin treatments, collagen stimulators or a combination of different aesthetic treatments as part of a longer-term treatment plan.

“This is why an in-depth consultation is so important,” Dr Emily explains. “Rather than deciding on a treatment before assessing the face, I prefer to understand what the patient wants to achieve and then tailor a treatment plan to that individual’s needs.”

Can filler improve your side profile?

Hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers can subtly change facial proportions when viewed from the side, with careful product selection and precise placement.

For example, adding a small amount of volume to the chin may improve its relationship with the nose and lips, particularly when a patient has a more recessed chin.

Filler can also enhance definition in areas such as the jawline or provide subtle support to the lips, depending on the patient’s individual anatomy and desired outcome.

However, Dr Emily is keen to emphasise that filler isn’t simply about adding volume.

“It’s about understanding where volume may be beneficial and, equally importantly, where it isn’t.”

A good profile balancing treatment should not make the face look obviously different or overfilled. The aim is for the result to feel natural and proportionate to the individual’s features.

How much filler is usually needed for profile balancing?

One of the most common questions patients have when considering profile balancing is how much filler they will need. However, there isn’t a standard amount of filler that applies to everyone.

As Dr Emily explains, the amount required depends on the patient’s anatomy, the area treated, the appropriate degree of correction and the patient’s age. Some patients may only require a small amount of filler, while others may require treatment across more than one area.

“I think it’s important that patients don’t approach profile balancing with a predetermined number of millilitres in mind,” says Dr Emily.

The goal isn’t to use a particular amount of filler. Instead, the aim is to achieve a natural, balanced result, with the amount of filler varying from patient to patient.

For this reason, Dr Emily prefers to assess the face holistically and develop a treatment plan based on the individual.

Where is filler used for profile balancing?

The areas treated will vary from person to person, depending on their facial structure and what they are looking to achieve.

Popular areas include the chin, jawline and lips. The nose can also significantly influence the profile, although this does not necessarily mean you need to treat it.

Sometimes, improving the projection or proportion of another area can create greater harmony between the features.

“I don’t think of profile balancing as a particular injection technique,” Dr Emily explains. “It’s more about understanding facial proportions and deciding where subtle changes may improve overall harmony.”

What type of dermal filler is best for profile balancing?

The type of injectable used for profile balancing will depend on the area being treated, the patient’s facial anatomy and the result being aimed for.

Hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers can be used to subtly enhance projection and definition in areas such as the chin, jawline and lips. Different formulations have different properties, allowing the practitioner to select a product according to the level of structure, support or flexibility required.

HArmonyCa® may also be considered as part of a facial balancing treatment plan. HArmonyCa® is a hybrid injectable combining hyaluronic acid (HA) with calcium hydroxyapatite (CaHA). The combination provides immediate structural support while stimulating collagen production over time.

“There isn’t one product that is right for every patient,” Dr Emily explains. “The choice depends on the patient’s anatomy, the area we’re treating and what we’re trying to achieve. Sometimes that may be a hyaluronic acid filler, while in other cases a product such as HArmonyCa® may be appropriate.”

Ultimately, product selection is part of the wider treatment planning process. Rather than choosing a filler first, Dr Emily assesses the patient’s facial structure, proportions and treatment goals before deciding which product, or combination of treatments, is most appropriate.

How long do the results of profile balancing last?

How long profile balancing lasts depends on the area treated and individual factors, including metabolism.

As a general guide, we typically say that dermal filler results can last around 12 months, although this can vary between patients and treatment areas. Some patients may choose to have maintenance appointments around every 9–12 months, while others may prefer to wait until they feel treatment is needed.

“I always recommend viewing aesthetic treatment as an ongoing process, rather than following a set maintenance schedule,” says Dr Emily.

The priority should be achieving a result that the patient feels comfortable with, rather than routinely adding more product.

How much does profile balancing cost?

The cost of profile balancing varies depending on the treatments recommended, the amount of product required and the tier you select.

At The Academy Clinic, we don’t take a one-size-fits-all approach to facial balancing. Following a detailed consultation, your practitioner can recommend a treatment plan based on your individual facial anatomy, concerns and desired outcome.

From October 2026, Dr Emily Mehta will be offering advanced filler Diamond appointments for patients seeking an experienced practitioner for advanced facial balancing, advanced dermal filler treatments and comprehensive treatment planning.

Advanced filler Diamond appointments with Dr Emily Mehta start from £450. Book online by selecting advanced filler Diamond.

A considered approach to profile balancing

Profile balancing isn’t about changing your features or trying to achieve a particular aesthetic ideal. For the right patient, subtle adjustments can help improve the relationship between individual facial features and create a more harmonious overall appearance.

The most important part of the process is understanding what you want to achieve and assessing your face as a whole before deciding whether treatment is appropriate.

Every appointment at The Academy Clinic begins with a comprehensive consultation, where you can discuss your concerns and whether profile balancing is right for you.

For more advanced filler treatments, such as tear trough and temple filler, a Diamond appointment is required.
