Microneedling Myth-Busting

You’ve probably heard of Microneedling, but what’s the hype? Can you believe everything you’ve heard? It’s time to bust those Microneedling myths and give you important info on this popular skin treatment.

What is Microneedling?

Collagen and elastin are required to keep skin healthy and strong. As we age, we produce less of it. This is a normal part of the ageing process. Add to this damage from sunlight, and the result can be skin that appears weaker, thinner and lax.

Microneedling uses a device (either manual or electric) which has very fine needles to create a controlled injury to the skin, without actually damaging it. This process stimulates the skin’s natural healing response, resulting in skin growth and new collagen and elastin formation.

Stimulating the skin’s healing process strengthens the skin from within, making it look healthy, radiant and rejuvenated. This also makes it a great treatment for ageing skin and wrinkles, scars, and pigmentation.

Here are some common myths associated with this treatment:

MYTH 1. Microneedling is painful

Numbing cream is used on the treatment area to improve comfort during this treatment. As the needles in the device are so fine, it feels more like a scratching sensation – but it is not usually painful.

MYTH 2. It will leave visible holes in my skin

Nope! You will not be able to see the holes created in the skin with the naked eye as they are so tiny and microscopic. 24 hours following the treatment, all these channels will have closed up as you quickly heal.

MYTH 3. Microneedling will make skin the bleed

Despite what you might see on social media, your skin will not bleed with this treatment. We aim to treat the superficial layers of the skin, so the skin goes red for a short space of time as it is nourished with blood flow. At most, you might get pinprick bleeding when treating scars – as a deeper treatment is required for this.

MYTH 4. It’s only used for ageing skin

This a great treatment to strengthen and tighten ageing skin, but microneedling is used for so much more! As well as fine lines and wrinkles, Microneedling can treat:

  • Rough skin texture and large pores
  • Mild acne and acne scars
  • Pigmentation
  • Stretch marks
  • Scars e.g. chickenpox scars, surgical scars, or traumatic scars
  • Hair loss on the scalp

MYTH 5. Results are seen straight away

With Microneedling, we see an improvement in the quality of the skin in the first 1-2 weeks following treatment. However, the main skin rejuvenating effect will be seen from 6 months to up to a year following the procedure. This is because skin growth due to increased production of collagen and elastin takes time to occur. The more treatments you have, the good news is that the benefits accumulate!

So if you want to heal your skin naturally and from within, Microneedling is a scientifically proven method to improve your skin confidence and a firm favourite at The Academy Clinic!
